Socioecological Production Landscapes and Seascapes (SEPLS)
in the Philippines
Satoyama is a Japanese word referring to working landscapes characterized by subsistence farming and secondary forests. It is maintained by close interaction between people and nature. In the Philippines, these refer to landscapes consisting of subsistence farms and associated woodlot known as muyong, or lakon, or komunal or pinugo in northern Luzon, or perhaps the bundok or gubat in the Tagalog regions and bukid or lasang or bungtod among the Cebuano speaking localities.

Our mission is to raise awareness of the Satoyama (and Satoumi) landscape conservation in the Philippines
and the urgent need to address biodiversity loss and implement restoration of landscape and seascape health towards global ecosystem goals.
